Umeå University was founded in 1965 and is now one of the leading comprehensive universities in Sweden. Currently it has about 35 000 students and 4 000 employees, and a strong international and multicultural presence with students, teachers and researchers from all over the world. The department of Computing Science is a mid-sized department with around 85 employees. Research at the department is conducted in a broad range of fields including cloud and grid computing, user interaction and knowledge modelling, parallel and high-performance computing, natural and formal language theory and technology, intelligent robotics and medical informatics. It includes both fundamental computer science questions as well as interdisciplinary and applied scientific issues. The research group for Natural and Formal Languages of the Department of Computing Science mixes linguistic competence with deep knowledge about techniques derived from theoretical computer science. The current main focus of the group is structure-based techniques for natural language processing. In addition, we offer a broad selection of courses and study programs, covering a wide range of modern information and computing technology.
